Prince Harry hoped his latest television appearance would spark positive headlines, but instead, he found himself facing a wave of criticism. The Duke of Sussex appeared in a skit on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, even lip-syncing to a popular Great British Bake Off soundbite. Although the episode was pre-recorded, backlash erupted after reports surfaced that Meghan Markle’s father, Thomas Markle, is in critical condition.
Thomas Markle Jr shared the update with The Daily Mail, explaining the severity of the situation. “I took dad to a hospital close to our home, and they did various scans, and the doctors said his life was in imminent danger,” he said. “They raced us by ambulance, with the sirens going, to a much bigger hospital in the centre of the city. My dad has undergone emergency surgery.”
He went on to make a public appeal to Meghan, urging her to show “compassion” toward her 81-year-old father as he fights for his life. The emotional plea quickly circulated online, turning attention toward the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and how they would respond.

Against this backdrop, Harry’s lighthearted comedy sketch landed poorly with some viewers. Critics argued that the timing appeared insensitive given the seriousness of Thomas Markle’s condition. Social media was filled with comments condemning Harry’s decision to take part in the skit.
One user wrote, “So Harry thinks it’s normal to do a comedy skit whilst his father-in-law lies in intensive care, in imminent danger, awaiting surgery? Shameful, embarrassing behaviour.” Another added, “What a total EMBARRASSMENT Prince Harry has become. It’s actually really sad to see.”
The reaction underscores the complicated relationship between Meghan and her father, as well as the intense public scrutiny that follows every move the couple makes. While the episode was recorded in advance and Harry has not commented publicly, the contrast between the lighthearted performance and the emergency unfolding within Meghan’s family has fueled widespread criticism.

The focus remains on Thomas Markle’s recovery, while questions linger about whether Meghan or Harry will address the situation publicly in the coming days.
