Trump Hints at Vance as 2028 Favorite but Stops Short of Endorsement

In a measured tone that fell short of a full endorsement, President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that Vice President J.D. Vance would “probably” be the frontrunner to carry on the MAGA movement into the 2028 presidential election. The statement, made during a public appearance tied to the 2028 Olympic task force, offered a glimpse into Trump’s thinking about his potential political heir but stopped well short of naming Vance outright as his successor.

When asked directly whether Vance would lead the MAGA base moving forward, Trump replied, “It’s too early, obviously, to talk about it, but certainly he’s doing a great job, and he would probably be favored at this point.” The president added, “I think Marco [Rubio] is also somebody that maybe would get together with J.D. in some form. I also think we have incredible people, some of the people on the stage right here.”

Trump’s restrained response comes amid growing speculation over who might inherit the mantle of the MAGA movement once he exits the political stage. Due to term limits under the U.S. Constitution, Trump is barred from seeking a third term, but he has continued to suggest otherwise, citing his popularity and economic policies, reports Reuters.

“I’d like to run, I have the best poll numbers I’ve ever had,” Trump declared, despite polling data from RealClearPolitics indicating a recent dip in approval ratings. “You know why? Because people love the tariffs, and they love that foreign countries aren’t ripping us off.” Pressed further, Trump ultimately acknowledged he would “probably not” run again.

JD Vance, 41, has seen a rapid political ascent since being tapped as Trump’s vice-presidential nominee during the 2024 Republican National Convention. His selection came after a transformation from a staunch Trump critic — once labeling Trump “reprehensible” and likening him to “Hitler’s America” — to one of the president’s most loyal allies.

Now embraced by Trump’s base, Vance is widely seen as a strong contender for the Republican nomination in 2028. Trump’s comments, though not an outright endorsement, serve to elevate Vance’s standing in a field that could also include names like Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

The event also saw appearances from Attorney General Pam Bondi, who Trump described as “great,” and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem — whom Trump mistakenly introduced as “Cristie Kerr,” confusing her with the professional golfer. Vance was present for the signing of the executive order but left the room prior to the president’s comments about him.
