A woman was killed Tuesday afternoon in a horrific crash on Houston’s South Side after an apparent chase between two drivers spiraled out of control, police said. The incident, which involved multiple people and ended with devastating injuries, remains under investigation.
According to the Houston Police Department, officers were called to the scene around 4 p.m. following reports of a major accident on Corder Street near Highway 288. Lt. Crowson with HPD said the events leading up to the crash began at a nearby apartment complex. Lt. Crowson stated that a woman and a man were involved in an argument at the complex.
After the confrontation, the two individuals got into separate vehicles and began chasing each other along Corder Street. During the chase, police say the male driver lost control of his vehicle. His car veered off course and slammed into a woman who was standing outside a parked Toyota Sienna. The impact pinned the woman and caused catastrophic injuries.
According to Lt. Crowson, the woman suffered the traumatic amputation of one leg at the scene, while her second leg was nearly severed during the crash. Officers who arrived first immediately applied a tourniquet in an effort to control the bleeding until Houston Fire Department paramedics arrived. The woman was then rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency surgery, according to Local ABC.
Despite life-saving efforts, she was later pronounced dead at the hospital. Lt. Crowson said the woman’s family was inside a nearby home when the crash occurred. They ran outside after hearing the collision and began administering first aid before officers arrived. Police also noted that the male driver showed signs of intoxication and was traveling at a high rate of speed at the time of the crash.
The man, identified only as a 34-year-old, was detained at the scene but later released. Authorities have not said why he was released or whether toxicology results are pending. Investigators have not disclosed the relationship between the woman who argued with the man and the male driver involved in the chase. It is also unclear whether the woman who was killed had any connection to the dispute.
The Harris County District Attorney’s Office is now reviewing the case to determine what, if any, charges may be filed. Police say the investigation is ongoing as they work to reconstruct the crash and clarify the sequence of events. The fatal incident has shaken the surrounding neighborhood and highlights the dangers of reckless driving and road confrontations, particularly when speed and suspected intoxication are involved.
