Michelle Obama, widely admired for her compassionate nature and pragmatic approach during her time as First Lady, offered assistance to Melania Trump during the 2016 presidential transition. Despite being the wife of former President Barack Obama, Michelle made significant impacts in her own right, known for her directness and willingness to help.

In a 2018 CNN interview with Robin Roberts, while discussing her memoir “Becoming,” Michelle maintained her characteristic grace and positivity. She spoke about her experiences as a politician’s spouse, reflecting on both the challenges and joys she encountered.

An important part of her journey was the transition to First Lady, during which Laura Bush, wife of former President George Bush, played a pivotal role. Michelle appreciated Bush’s supportive gesture of being “a phone call away.”

Following this precedent, Michelle extended a similar offer of guidance to Melania Trump in 2016. However, Melania, the wife of then-President Donald Trump, did not take up Michelle’s offer. When asked by Roberts if Melania had reached out for advice, Michelle confirmed she had not.

In response to the interview, Melania’s spokeswoman, Stephanie Grisham, stated that Melania is an independent individual who navigates her First Lady role in her way, seeking advice from her professional White House team as needed.

Despite not accepting Michelle’s offer, Melania reportedly connected with Laura Bush, sharing a conversation over tea. Melania has not publicly explained her decision to decline Michelle’s assistance and has not commented further on the matter.
