10-year-old Alabama girl reported missing was found dead in her home, allegedly killed by another child

“A bright light to our halls each day”: Alabama girl, 10, found dead inside her home after being reported missing another child charged with her murder A quiet Friday night in Piedmont, Alabama, turned to tragedy after police responding to a missing child report made a devastating discovery the body of 10-year-old Katheryn Bigbee, found dead inside her own home, allegedly killed by another child.

Officers from the Piedmont Police Department “immediately” responded to an undisclosed address at 10:51 p.m. after receiving the missing child report. Upon arrival, first responders found the young girl deceased inside the residence. The Calhoun County Coroner’s Office later identified the victim as Katheryn Bigbee.

A second juvenile, whose identity has not been released, was subsequently taken into custody and charged with one count of murder. Authorities have declined to share further details about the circumstances of the killing or the relationship between the two children, citing the fact that both the victim and the suspect are minors. The investigation remains ongoing, according to a report from the New York Post.

Piedmont Police Chief Nathan Johnson broke his silence with a statement that captured the weight of the moment. “This is a heartbreaking situation for everyone involved and for our entire community,” he said. “We ask that you keep the family affected by this tragedy in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.”

The grief extended well beyond the police department. Piedmont Elementary School, where Katheryn was a student, shared a message of mourning on Facebook, remembering her as far more than just a name in a report. “Our entire Piedmont Elementary School family is grieving as we remember a sweet little girl who brought smiles, kindness, and a bright light to our halls each day,” the post read.

“Katheryn had a joyful, spunky personality that made her truly special. She was an enthusiastic reader and will be remembered for the happiness she shared so freely. She will always be a part of our school family, and her memory will live on in the hearts of her classmates, teachers, and all who knew and loved her.”

For Katheryn’s family, the loss has been nothing short of shattering. Blake Trammel, a relative, described a household consumed by grief and confusion in the days since her death. “She was a light in any room she walked into. I cannot express the pain, guilt, and emptiness that has come from all of this. We don’t have answers, only more questions,” he reportedly wrote.

Katheryn Bigbee was just ten years old. She loved reading, lit up every room she entered, and by all accounts left a mark on everyone fortunate enough to know her. Her community is now left to grieve and to search for answers that may take time to come.
