A Michigan man accused of brutally assaulting and torturing his girlfriend for weeks is now facing murder charges after the woman succumbed to her injuries, court records show.
Thirty-year-old Jonathan M. Zieroff appeared in court Monday for a preliminary hearing in connection with the 2024 death of 35-year-old Kelley K. LaLonde. Prosecutors revealed new details about the horrific abuse that left LaLonde with more than 50 injuries before she died after months on life support.
Before LaLonde’s death, Zieroff had been charged with assault with intent to murder following a violent attack that caused severe brain bleeding and multiple fractures. Investigators said the abuse spanned several days and left the victim with catastrophic injuries.
On September 12, LaLonde’s mother grew concerned when she could not reach her daughter and went to the home Zieroff shared with his mother in Carrollton Township. After seeing LaLonde’s car parked outside, she requested a police welfare check.
Responding officers from the Carrollton Township Police Department discovered LaLonde unresponsive in a bed inside the home. According to reports, she was soaked in urine, her breathing was shallow, and her fists were clenched tightly. She was rushed to the hospital, where doctors determined her skull was fractured and her body was covered in bruises. Medical staff also noted severe internal injuries, including vaginal trauma.
Zieroff was not home when police arrived. His mother reportedly told investigators he had gone to meet a friend earlier that day. When questioned about LaLonde’s condition, she allegedly gave conflicting statements and said her son had provided varying explanations about what had happened.
During Monday’s hearing, a nurse practitioner who examined LaLonde testified that she identified 52 separate injuries in different stages of healing. “Because of the severity, darkness, and size, I would say they can’t be that old,” she told the court, according to MLive.
“However, they could also have been worse, and this is just what we’re seeing.” An autopsy later confirmed that LaLonde died from blunt force trauma to the head, with the manner of death ruled a homicide.
Investigators executed a search warrant at Zieroff’s residence the same day and later used cellphone data to track him down. He was found hiding in a wooded area nearby and taken into custody.
At the end of Monday’s hearing, Saginaw County District Judge Terry L. Clark ruled there was enough evidence to send the case to circuit court on charges of open murder and torture. Despite noting that parts of the prosecution’s case appeared “shaky,” Clark said the evidence warranted a full trial.
“Kelley was loved by so many, and for all the support we have received during this time, we are forever grateful,” a GoFundMe page started for her said.
