A Springfield Township woman has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after her 16-year-old autistic son was found dead, emaciated, and chained to a cot inside a utility closet earlier this year.
Tamara Moore, 51, received the maximum sentence after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter and child endangerment in connection with her son’s death in February 2024. Prosecutors described the case as one of unimaginable neglect and cruelty, saying the teenager had likely gone without food or water for weeks before his death.
Authorities discovered the teen’s body during a welfare check at the family’s home on Belgreen Lane. Investigators said the boy had been kept chained to a cot and appeared to have been severely malnourished. “There was no food in the teen’s digestive tract,” prosecutors told the court, adding that the extent of his starvation was consistent with prolonged deprivation.

Moore was arrested at the scene, and police later issued a warrant for her boyfriend, William Turnage, who was also charged in the case. Turnage later pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and child endangerment, agreeing to testify against Moore as part of a plea deal. He was sentenced to between 11 and 15 years in prison, as per WXIX.
During the sentencing hearing, Moore tearfully addressed the court, offering an apology but also shifting some blame toward her partner. “I did love my son, and I’m sorry for staying in a very abusive relationship,” she said.
However, Judge Jody Luebbers rejected any notion that Moore’s circumstances excused her actions, condemning the severe neglect that led to her son’s death. “This is one of the most heinous cases I’ve ever seen,” the judge said before handing down the sentence.
Prosecutors emphasized that Moore had multiple opportunities to seek help for her son but chose not to. They argued that her failure to act amounted to deliberate indifference to his suffering. The courtroom fell silent as the details of the boy’s final days were read aloud, painting a harrowing picture of isolation and abuse.

The case has left the Springfield Township community shaken, with many residents expressing outrage and grief over the child’s treatment. Local advocates for children with disabilities have called for greater awareness and stronger systems of protection for vulnerable minors.
As Moore begins her prison term, officials hope the tragic case will serve as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and intervention when signs of neglect or abuse appear.
