Donald Trump drew attention during the 2026 FIFA World Cup trophy presentation after remaining on stage as Spain celebrated its title victory over Argentina.
The US president joined FIFA president Gianni Infantino on the pitch at MetLife Stadium to present medals before handing the World Cup trophy to Spain captain Rodri following Spain’s 1-0 extra-time win.
As Spain’s players gathered for the trophy lift, Infantino appeared to gesture for Trump to move away from the center of the stage. Rodri also appeared to motion for the president to step aside before the celebrations began.
While Infantino left the podium, Trump instead moved to the side of the stage and stayed alongside the Spanish squad as they lifted the trophy. The moment was captured on television broadcasts and quickly circulated across social media, where it became a talking point among fans.
The incident echoed last year’s FIFA Club World Cup final, when Trump also remained on stage during Chelsea’s trophy celebrations.
Earlier in the evening, Trump and Infantino were met with boos from sections of the crowd as they walked onto the pitch for the medal presentation. Trump had watched the final from a secure suite inside the stadium before taking part in the post-match ceremony.
Spain secured its second FIFA World Cup title after Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in the 106th minute of extra time, sealing a 1-0 victory over defending champions Argentina.
