Queen Camilla’s attendance at Prince Harry’s private meeting with King Charles was an essential part of the family reunion, according to a royal author who says any effort to repair the father-son relationship must also include the Queen.
Harry met Charles at Highgrove House on July 10 during a private family gathering. Meghan Markle and the couple’s children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, were also reported to have attended, giving the King a rare opportunity to spend time with the Sussex family.
Royal author Catherine Mayer said Camilla’s position in Charles’ life means she cannot be excluded from any meaningful attempt at reconciliation.
“She is a non-negotiable part of Charles’ life,” Mayer told People. “There is no reconciliation with him without her.”
The gathering was kept away from public view, with no official photographs or details of the discussions released. A source close to the royal family said the privacy was intended to give those involved space to rebuild their personal relationships without outside pressure.
“It is better that people don’t know anything about these meetings,” the source said. “They should be allowed to rekindle those family ties.”

Camilla’s presence was particularly significant because Harry has previously spoken openly about his complicated relationship with his stepmother. In his 2023 memoir, Spare, the Duke of Sussex reflected on his father’s marriage to Camilla in 2005 and described the difficult emotions surrounding changes within the royal family.
Harry also addressed the relationship during a 2023 interview with Good Morning America. Although he acknowledged that he and Camilla had not spoken for some time, he rejected the suggestion that his feelings toward members of the royal family were defined solely by hostility.
“I love every member of my family, despite the differences,” Harry said.
He also described his interactions with Camilla as “perfectly pleasant” and referred to her as his stepmother, distancing himself from the more negative image often associated with their relationship.
The Highgrove gathering has been viewed as a possible step toward improving Harry’s relationship with his father after years of public tension. However, the private nature of the meeting means little is known about what was discussed or whether any formal reconciliation was reached.
What appears clear from Mayer’s assessment is that Charles and Camilla are regarded as a united partnership. Any future effort by Harry to rebuild ties with the King is therefore likely to involve accepting Camilla’s central role in his father’s personal life.
For now, the decision to keep the gathering private has allowed the family to avoid public scrutiny while exploring whether strained relationships can be repaired away from cameras and official statements.
