Doctor Warns Against Using Cough Syrups, Recommends Common Alternative Instead

As winter approaches and coughs begin to spread, many people are turning to over-the-counter cough syrups for relief. However, a medical expert has advised against using them, saying they are largely ineffective and that natural remedies can work better.

Dr. Sami, a UK-based physician who shares health advice on TikTok, recently told his followers to stop relying on traditional cough syrups. He explained that while they are a popular choice, studies show they do little to actually treat cough symptoms.

“Cough syrups do not work, but there is something that does, which is much cheaper,” he said. “Most coughs, especially from colds or viruses, are caused by inflammation or irritation of the airways, and cough syrups, which are basically sugar, water, and sedatives, don’t really address this.”

According to Dr. Sami, a major review found no reliable evidence that cough syrups reduce symptoms effectively. Instead, he recommended several simple and affordable alternatives that can provide real relief.

“Honey, on the other hand, does show good evidence to reduce cough symptoms — better than placebo and cough syrups, especially for nighttime coughs,” he explained. “We think that’s because honey coats the throat, which reduces irritation, and it also has mild, natural anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties.”

The doctor also mentioned that menthol and warm beverages can help soothe the throat and ease discomfort. Warm liquids and steam may loosen mucus, making it easier to clear the airways, reports the Express.

Many experts agree with Dr. Sami’s assessment, noting that there is limited scientific evidence showing that store-bought cough medicines actually work. In most cases, they perform no better than a simple sugar pill. Medical professionals also advise against giving cough syrups to children under six years old due to safety concerns.

Instead, natural remedies like honey and lemon are recommended for older children and adults. Honey helps coat the throat and ease irritation, reducing the frequency and severity of coughing. However, it should never be given to babies under 12 months old due to the risk of infant botulism.

According to NHS guidance, most coughs clear up on their own within three to four weeks. The best treatment is usually rest, hydration, and self-care. “You should rest, drink plenty of fluids, and try to stay home if you feel unwell,” the NHS advises.

If a cough lasts longer than three weeks, causes unexplained weight loss, or occurs in someone with a weakened immune system, doctors recommend seeking medical advice. For most people, however, simple remedies — not cough syrups — are the most effective solution.
