Meghan Markle is once again at the center of scrutiny, this time through a striking comparison that casts her as the “antithesis” of duty. The commentary comes from British royal expert Hilary Fordwich, who weighed in on remarks made in the CNN docuseries America’s Prince by journalist Tina Brown.
Brown reflected on the pressures faced by Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, who married John F. Kennedy Jr., saying, “There was glamour and elegance. But that came with so much pressure in terms of…the monster of the media…that she fell apart really.”
Carolyn and John tragically died in a plane crash in 1999 at the ages of 33 and 38. Now, Meghan is being compared to Carolyn, particularly in terms of media scrutiny and public perception. In an interview with Fox News Digital, royal commentator Chard elaborated on the comparison.
“There are some similarities between Carolyn and Meghan,” she said. “I do think they were admired for their glamour. Both were viewed by the fashion industry as the types to admire and follow. They certainly rose to fame by marrying into iconic families.”
Chard also noted that both women endured intense media attention that focused heavily on their appearances and personalities. “It’s difficult for anyone not born into fame to handle the press hounding,” she added.
However, the commentator drew a clear distinction in how each woman responded. Carolyn “withdrew completely [from the press], which maintained her mystique.” Meghan, on the other hand, “went … on a publicity tour [after her royal exit]. Her raw ambition for recognition and admiration backfired on her.”
Chard concluded with a pointed assessment of Meghan’s current approach: “At this juncture, the only proper route for Meghan would be for her to lie low. She’ll never do that, though. Everything that [appears to have] meaning for her is the antithesis of service and devotion to duty.”
