Prince Harry’s return to the United Kingdom has renewed speculation that he could repair his strained relationship with the royal family, although sources appear divided over the likelihood of a reconciliation with Prince William.
The Duke of Sussex stepped back from his role as a senior working royal in 2020 and moved to the United States with his wife, Meghan Markle. At the time, Harry was reportedly deeply upset and believed circumstances had forced him to make the decision.
Despite building a new life in California, Harry has maintained that Britain remains his home country. Some of his previous comments have also suggested that he considered the United States a temporary home, particularly around the time he was expected to meet his father, King Charles.
Recent developments have prompted cautious optimism among some of Harry’s friends. They reportedly believe the King has adopted a softer approach towards his younger son, raising hopes that William could eventually reconsider his position as well.
According to a Daily Mail report by Alison Boshoff, one of Harry’s friends challenged the widely reported account that the two brothers remain completely estranged. The friend claimed that “there is communication between [the brothers]” despite the continuing public narrative of a rift.
The source acknowledged that any visible reunion was unlikely to happen immediately but expressed hope that the brothers could eventually appear together.
“It’s too soon now but there is a hope and a belief that one day they will appear in public together and that will completely change the narrative,” the friend said.
However, people described as being close to William have continued to play down the possibility of an imminent reconciliation. They have maintained that the Prince of Wales remains “furious” with Harry following years of public disagreements and allegations involving the royal family.
Even so, one source acknowledged that attitudes towards the Duke of Sussex might be beginning to shift, saying that “there is a bit of optimism that we might be starting to see a change in sentiment about Harry”.
The source added that it was “one step at a time”.
The contrasting accounts indicate that tensions within the royal family have not been fully resolved. While Harry’s supporters see his return and the King’s reported attitude as signs of possible progress, William’s position remains a significant obstacle.
Neither Harry nor William has publicly confirmed that their relationship is improving. For now, reports of communication and changing sentiment appear to reflect cautious hope among people around the family rather than evidence of a formal reconciliation.
