Prince Harry is drawing fresh criticism as Meghan Markle’s ongoing professional shifts spark growing concern among royal commentators. The Duchess of Sussex has spent the past few years trying to rebuild her public identity, moving from lifestyle ventures to discussions about a potential return to acting.
Her changing direction, however, has led to harsh reviews, including from one well-known royal author. Writing for the Times, royal commentator Tina Brown delivered one of the bluntest assessments yet of Meghan’s strategic choices.
“I have never seen anybody in professional life make as many mistakes as Meghan has. And unfortunately, Harry is not the brightest bulb, either,” she wrote. Brown argued that Harry expected Meghan to guide him once they stepped away from life inside the monarchy. But the way she sees it, the outcome has been far different from what the couple imagined.

“So he thought that Meghan would be his great sort of guide in the big, wide world beyond Buckingham Palace, as it were. And it turns out that Meghan makes one terrible professional decision after another,” Brown said.
Meghan’s public projects have varied widely since the couple relocated to California. She launched a lifestyle brand, hinted at future television work, and teased new media ventures. Each move has drawn intense scrutiny from both supporters and critics, who say the constant rebranding has left the public unsure of her long-term direction.
Brown suggested that these choices have contributed to a growing perception problem for the couple. She argued that Harry and Meghan now face strained relationships across multiple circles, from Hollywood to media partners who once viewed their post-royal potential as promising.
“And now they are sort of pariahs everywhere, it seems, which is a very difficult situation for them because America was supposed to be the place that paid the bills,” she added. The couple’s move to the United States in 2020 was framed as an opportunity to build financial independence and creative freedom.

They secured major deals in streaming, publishing, and production, but several projects have struggled to maintain momentum. Critics say this track record has raised doubts about their ability to establish a stable and lasting brand outside the royal spotlight.
Despite the criticism, Harry and Meghan continue to pursue new ventures. Supporters argue that building a new identity after leaving the royal family is complex and that the couple is still navigating a challenging transition. For now, though, public opinion remains divided, and the pressure around their next professional decisions continues to build.
