Meghan Markle is facing renewed criticism from royal experts who accuse her of hypocrisy, as Prince Harry suffers a fresh legal defeat in his ongoing battle for security in the United Kingdom.
Earlier this week, Prince Harry’s appeal to secure publicly funded police protection during visits to the UK with his family was dismissed by the courts, marking a significant blow to the Duke of Sussex. The court’s decision reaffirmed an earlier ruling that Harry is not entitled to the same level of taxpayer-funded security as working royals now that he has stepped back from official duties.

While the legal drama continues for Prince Harry, his wife, Meghan Markle, is under scrutiny for what some commentators are calling a double standard. Despite their vocal criticism of the royal institution, Meghan continues to use her HRH title and the Sussex name in her public appearances and brand ventures, raising questions about her intentions.
During a discussion aired by The Sun, royal editor Matt Wilkinson questioned: “Why do you think she’s using her HRH title and clinging on to her Sussex name rather than Markle?”
PR expert Mark Borkowski responded bluntly: “Well, it’s clearly social capital. I’m sure her PA uses it to ensure that she gets the top table at a restaurant. It will have a huge weight in America to have that kudos of still having that sort of royal aura around her.”

Borkowski went further, labeling the duchess’ behavior as “hypocritical,” suggesting that Meghan strategically flaunts her royal connections to bolster her status within elite social and professional circles.

Royal commentator Katie Nicholl echoed the sentiment, noting that Meghan’s continued use of royal titles contradicts the couple’s repeated criticism of the monarchy. “I think it just poses a bit of a hypocrisy element,” she said. “You’ve attacked this institution many, many times and yet you want to retain all of the perks and privileges of being in that institution, which is, of course, the titles.”
Critics argue that the Duchess of Sussex’s selective use of her royal ties undermines the couple’s narrative of independence from the royal family. The couple famously stepped down as senior working royals in 2020, citing media intrusion and a desire for a more private life in the United States.
With Harry’s court losses stacking up and Meghan’s public image once again under the microscope, the debate over the Sussexes’ evolving relationship with the monarchy shows no sign of slowing down.
