A Marathon woman has been arrested on a felony charge after deputies said she threw a knife at her boyfriend during an argument sparked by a $5 mobile payment he sent to another woman. According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, the confrontation happened late Thursday afternoon at the couple’s trailer on 37th Street.
Deputies said the incident began just before 5 p.m., when 34-year-old Danielle Nichole Banks saw that her boyfriend had transferred $5 to what he described as a “female friend.” The arrest report states that Banks “confronted” him, “called him derogatory names, and struck him multiple times in the mouth” before the situation escalated even further.
Authorities said Banks then grabbed a kitchen knife and threw it overhand, hitting her boyfriend near the eyes with the bladed end. The knife left a cut on his face, prompting the victim to contact law enforcement.
After the attack, deputies said Banks fled the scene in a Hyundai. A U.S. Border Patrol agent in an unmarked car happened to spot the vehicle and followed her. She eventually stopped under an apartment building along 39th Street.
An arriving MCSO deputy reported seeing Banks “attempting to hide by ducking down inside the vehicle” before taking her into custody. When questioned, deputies said she “initially stated she threw a plate into the sink and a shard may have struck her boyfriend. She “later invoked her right to remain silent and declined to provide further details.”
Banks was arrested on charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and misdemeanor resisting arrest. As of Friday morning, records show she was being held without bond at the Key West jail facility. She is scheduled to be arraigned next Friday morning.
Deputies have not released additional information on the victim’s condition, though he was treated for the facial injury at the scene. The sheriff’s office continues to investigate the incident, which they say began with a minor payment but quickly escalated into violence.
