Texas Man Allegedly Kills Friend in Bizarre Kevlar Helmet Shooting Game

Authorities in Houston say what first appeared to be a suicide is now being investigated as a bizarre and deadly game between two friends. One man is dead, and the other is facing a murder charge.

On August 17, deputies were called to a home in northwest Harris County after reports of a possible suicide, Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said in a statement posted to X.

“Upon arrival, units found an adult male who sustained what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the head. He was transported to a hospital, but subsequently died from his injuries,” Gonzalez explained. The victim was later identified as 34-year-old Aaron Prout.

As detectives dug deeper, Gonzalez said “things weren’t adding up” and that “the truth was ultimately revealed.” According to investigators, Prout and his friend, 37-year-old Sean Odonnell, had been taking turns shooting each other while wearing a Kevlar helmet inside the house.

At some point, Prout was fatally shot in the head. O’Donnell was arrested on August 28 and charged with murder.

Sheriff Gonzalez expressed disbelief at the circumstances, saying: “Hard to believe two so-called friends would take turns shooting at each other wearing a Kevlar helmet, inside a house in a residential neighborhood, while using a rifle.”

Odonnell has been booked into the Harris County Jail. Authorities have not said what may have prompted the men to engage in such a dangerous act, but the case has shocked the local community. What began as an investigation into a possible suicide has now turned into a homicide case, raising troubling questions about the judgment and choices that led to Prout’s death.
