A 32-year-old Saginaw woman is facing serious charges after police say she shot a man six times inside her home and admitted she would have fired more if she had not run out of ammunition.
Authorities said the incident happened about 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 21, at the home of Darnisha M. Sanders in the 1200 block of Maple Street. Sanders herself called 911 to report the shooting of a 42-year-old man, according to MLive.com.
Prosecutors allege that during the call, Sanders mocked the victim as he cried in the background. She allegedly told dispatchers that she fired because the man was antagonizing her. Sanders also said she had run out of bullets, but if she had more, she would have shot off his fingers and toes, according to court records.
Responding officers found the man suffering from six gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he remains in critical condition. Prosecutors said one of the bullets is still lodged in his head as of Tuesday morning, Sept. 23.
Police recovered the handgun believed to have been used in the shooting. The weapon is registered to Sanders. While being taken into custody, officers said Sanders again expressed frustration over running out of ammunition. She also mocked the victim for crying, prosecutors allege.
Authorities have not disclosed the nature of the relationship between Sanders and the wounded man. Sanders was arraigned Tuesday before Saginaw County District Judge A.T. Frank. She faces one count of assault with intent to murder, one count of discharging a firearm in or at a building, and two counts of felony firearm. Assault with intent to murder carries a maximum sentence of life in prison.
During the hearing, prosecutors argued Sanders posed a serious risk to the community. They asked that her bond be set at $500,000. “She showed no remorse [and] instead she made fun of the victim’s condition,” prosecutors told the court.
“My child has been involved in an abusive situation since 2017,” a Facebook post and GoFundMe reads from a woman, Evelyn Burkes, who has identified herself as Sanders’ mother. “I need assistance with finding a defense attorney and money towards her bond in regards to this domestic abuse situation that turned into self-defense.”
Judge Frank agreed and set the bond at the requested amount. Sanders is scheduled to return to court for a preliminary examination on Oct. 14. The victim remains hospitalized as the investigation continues. Police and prosecutors have not said whether further charges may be filed.
