A Kansas City, Kansas, man has been convicted of murdering his estranged wife after lying in wait for her outside a home where she had sought refuge. Miguel Flores, 35, was found guilty of first-degree premeditated murder and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, the Wyandotte County District Attorney’s Office announced Wednesday.
The deadly shooting happened on November 21, 2022, outside a residence near South 52nd Terrace and Metropolitan Avenue. According to court records, 23-year-old Loren Flores had been separated from her husband and was staying with friends at the time of her death.
A witness told investigators that Miguel Flores arrived at the home earlier that day and waited for Loren to return from running errands. When she arrived, he was on the front porch, visibly angry. Before approaching him, Loren reportedly handed her cellphone to the witness and said, “Call 911 if he starts to hurt me.” Moments later, the witness heard an argument, followed by the sound of gunfire.
When police arrived, they found Loren dead on the porch with multiple gunshot wounds. Miguel Flores had fled the scene in a red Dodge Challenger. According to the witness, Flores was likely heading to a relative’s home in another part of Kansas City, Kansas. Police officers responded to that address and spotted the suspect’s vehicle in the driveway.
As officers approached, Flores reportedly emerged from the driver’s side of the car and pointed a handgun at them. The officers quickly backed away and ordered him to drop the weapon. Backup units were called, and as more officers arrived, Flores surrendered. Court records show that he eventually got out of the car and dropped the gun without further resistance.
Police later identified the firearm as a Glock 10mm handgun, matching the same caliber as the shell casings recovered from the homicide scene. Prosecutors argued that Flores’ actions showed clear premeditation, noting that he had been waiting for Loren to return before confronting her.
Flores now faces sentencing following his conviction. Loren’s family and friends have remembered her as kind and full of life, mourning a young woman whose attempt to find safety ended in tragedy.
