A 29-year-old Green Bay man is facing serious criminal charges, including two counts of attempted first-degree intentional homicide, after he allegedly used a machete to attack his ex-girlfriend and the man she was with inside her own home, an incident so violent it left both victims hospitalised and shook a quiet residential street.
David Mairena-Garcia was arrested Monday following the attack on Edgewood Drive, and a criminal complaint was filed against him Tuesday. In total, he faces six counts related to the incident. A judge set his bond at $750,000 cash during a court appearance on Tuesday.
He is due back in court on May 19 for the balance of his initial appearance. According to the complaint, Mairena-Garcia used a key to gain entry to the woman’s home, a detail that underscored just how premeditated investigators believe the attack may have been.
Once inside, he allegedly set upon the male victim, a 23-year-old, with the machete, striking him in the shoulder, forearm and shin. He then allegedly turned on his ex-girlfriend, a 26-year-old, beating her and leaving her with lacerations on her hand and neck, as well as a head injury.
The woman later recounted the terrifying ordeal to police. “David did not say anything, he just went in and started cutting them and attacking them with the machete,” she told officers. She also informed police that the attack had not come entirely without warning, she “stated David had already made several death threats to her by text message and in person.”
The chaos that unfolded next saw the male victim flee the bedroom and briefly run outside, giving Mairena-Garcia an opening to continue attacking the woman before chasing her out of the house as well. He then pursued the male victim down Edgewood Drive, wielding the machete, before getting into what the victim believed was a black SUV and driving away.
Officers used Flock cameras to track Mairena-Garcia’s movements and apprehended him during a traffic stop shortly after. When questioned by police, Mairena-Garcia offered a chilling account of his state of mind during the attack. According to the complaint, he said he saw his “wife” and another male in his bed and “lost his mind and blacked out because of the rage.” He told investigators that all he was thinking was “just wanting to kill them.”
He also directed authorities to the location along the highway where he had discarded the machete, which was subsequently recovered. The complaint further reveals that Mairena-Garcia and the female victim share a child together, adding yet another layer of tragedy to an already devastating incident.
