Sam Asghari has spoken out following Britney Spears’ emotional comments about their marriage, which she recently shared on social media. Through his representative, Asghari told PEOPLE, “Our marriage was very real to me. It may have been short, but we were together for seven years.
I was in love with her, will always have love for her, and wish her the best always.” His remarks came shortly after Spears, 43, reflected on Instagram about her relationship with Asghari, describing those years as “the hardest years of my life.”
She also revealed personal struggles during that period, including feeling “cut off from calling or texting” her two sons, Jayden James and Sean Preston, whom she shares with ex-husband Kevin Federline. Spears further explained that while she and Asghari were married, it “almost felt like a fake distraction to help me deal with it,” adding that denial and tears were how she coped.
Asghari, 31, has previously addressed both the challenges and opportunities that came with being in a relationship under intense public scrutiny. In a June 2025 interview with Page Six, he admitted, “I can’t sit here and lie and say, ‘It wasn’t good for me.’
When you’re in such a public relationship … it sort of gave me that platform for who I am.” Their story began in 2016 when they met on the set of Spears’ “Slumber Party” music video, where Asghari played her on-screen love interest. Their professional connection grew into a romance that led to marriage in June 2022.
However, their marriage lasted just over a year. Asghari filed for divorce on Aug. 16, 2023, after 14 months together. The divorce was finalized in May 2024, formally ending their relationship.
Despite the separation, Asghari’s recent statement shows that he continues to hold respect and affection for Spears. His comments also highlight how much their relationship, though brief in legal terms, meant to him on a personal level.
