Global superstar Shakira is opening up about the insecurities she faced early in her career and how those challenges influenced her relationship with beauty and self-expression. In a candid interview for the Beauty Then & Now segment of her haircare line, the Colombian singer reflected on her journey from self-doubt to self-assurance.
Speaking about one of her earliest high-profile appearances at the 1st Annual Latin Grammy Awards in 2000, Shakira admitted that her lack of confidence led her to rely heavily on makeup and over-preparing for events.
“Back then, when I was younger, I think I took even more time to get ready,” she shared. “I think the lack of experience, probably, and the lack of confidence made me wear a lot more makeup, and be extra concerned.”
Now 47 and a multi-award-winning artist with decades in the spotlight, Shakira says her approach to beauty has transformed over the years, largely due to her growing self-confidence. “And now… I’m a little more confident,” she added with a smile, signaling the growth she has experienced both personally and professionally.
Shakira also spoke about her approach to performing, emphasizing the importance of authenticity and comfort on stage. Known for her high-energy performances and effortless charisma, the singer revealed she now prefers a more natural appearance when performing live.

“When it comes to beauty and when it comes to performing, I need to feel as natural as possible,” she explained. That means avoiding wigs and ditching overly high heels — two things she once felt compelled to wear to match industry standards or stage expectations.
Her evolution reflects a broader message about embracing one’s individuality and rejecting unnecessary pressures, particularly in an image-focused industry.
Fans will soon get to see Shakira bring that natural confidence to the stage once again. She is currently preparing for a major performance in San Antonio, Texas, scheduled for Friday, June 13. The show is part of a series of appearances in support of her latest projects and musical releases.
As she continues to inspire millions with her music, Shakira is also using her platform to advocate for self-love and authenticity — proving that true beauty, much like true artistry, only grows stronger with time.
