“This is one of the most erratic press conferences”: Trump speech sparks stunned reaction online

President Donald Trump drew a wave of stunned reaction online Wednesday after delivering a rambling speech following the G7 Summit in France.

Speaking from Évian-les-Bains, Trump addressed the Iran agreement while standing onstage with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick behind him. His remarks stretched for more than 40 minutes and quickly became the focus of sharp criticism from political observers, journalists and commentators across social media.

The reaction centered not only on Trump’s comments but also on his delivery, appearance and overall demeanor. Several critics described the speech as unusually unfocused, while others questioned the president’s physical state during the appearance.

“This is one of the most erratic press conferences I think I’ve ever seen from Trump. He sounds like he’s got a rotten cold,” Mikey Smith, deputy political editor for The Mirror, wrote on X.

Another political commentator, identified as a former CIA case officer, also weighed in on the president’s appearance.

“Even with the bronze plaster on his face, the president looks exceedingly unwell,” the commentator wrote on X.

Others responded with disbelief or sarcasm as clips from the speech circulated online. The political commentary account Spiro’s Ghost posted a brief but pointed reaction: “Ummm………….,”

Ron Filipkowski, a MeidasTouch editor and attorney, highlighted one line from Trump’s remarks with his own mocking summary.

“A few missiles never hurt anybody,” Filipkowski wrote on X.

The reaction continued across platforms, with academics and media figures criticizing the tone and substance of the speech. Georgetown University professor Anthony M. Hopper offered one of the harshest assessments.

“This is the dumbest speech in the history of speeches. My 7th grade speech for class secretary was better,” Hopper wrote on X.

On Bluesky, former Chicago Tribune Metro editor Mark Jacob posted a different kind of jab, appearing to reference Trump’s comments about Iran and regional tensions.

“Sounds like Trump’s personal ‘Strait of Hormuz’ just opened,” Jacob wrote.

Editor Amanda Katz, a former Washington Post writer, also reacted on Bluesky, tying the speech to domestic policy and economic hardship.

“Heads up to the moms whose SNAP benefits just got cut,” Katz posted.

The speech came as Trump continued to face scrutiny over his foreign policy messaging, particularly around Iran. But the online reaction on Wednesday suggested that, for many critics, the most striking part of the appearance was not only what Trump said, but how he said it.

By the end of the address, the president’s remarks had become a flashpoint online, with commentators framing the speech as erratic, confusing and politically tone-deaf.

Sounds like Trump's personal "Strait of Hormuz" just opened.
