Dallas authorities say a woman intentionally set a house on fire and then tried to sabotage firefighters as they worked to extinguish the flames, leading to a string of charges that are expected to grow. Jermecia Denise Murphy, 37, is now in custody following the dramatic incident early Friday morning.
Dallas Fire-Rescue (DFR) received multiple 911 calls at 12:58 a.m. about a fire at a one-story home in the 2900 block of Prosperity Ave. When firefighters arrived, they found heavy flames coming from a room at the front of the house. Crews moved quickly and brought the fire under control by 1:35 a.m.
But as firefighters worked, Murphy allegedly interfered in an extraordinary way. According to officials, she approached one of the active fire hoses with a knife and stabbed it repeatedly, attempting to stop crews from putting out the blaze. Fire personnel immediately detained her, and police arrested her at the scene. She was first charged with criminal mischief.
Investigators soon determined the fire was “incendiary in nature,” meaning someone deliberately used an ignition source to set combustible materials ablaze in the front room. Authorities say multiple witnesses reported hearing Murphy admit to starting the fire while she was slashing the hose. Based on those accounts and the physical evidence, officials believe she is responsible for setting the blaze.
Fortunately, no one was inside the home at the time, and no injuries were reported. The house was unoccupied when the fire began, which helped firefighters prevent further harm after containing the flames.
Murphy was taken to the Dallas County Jail, where she now faces several charges: criminal mischief, interfering with public duties, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of marijuana. Her total bond is set at $16,000. Dallas Fire-Rescue officials expect arson to be added to the list once the investigation is formally completed.
The case has drawn attention not only because of the alleged arson but also because of the unusual confrontation with firefighters. Stabbing a fire hose is both dangerous and disruptive, and investigators say the action put first responders at risk while also threatening the surrounding area.
Authorities have not yet revealed a motive, and it remains unclear why Murphy may have targeted the house or attempted to hinder firefighters. Neighbors in the Prosperity Avenue area reported being startled awake by the commotion but relieved that the fire was contained before spreading to nearby homes.
As the arson investigation continues, officials say the evidence so far supports adding more severe charges. For now, Murphy remains behind bars as detectives work to piece together what led to the late-night blaze — and why the suspect allegedly tried to stop crews from saving the property.
