Study Finds Glucosamine And Chondroitin Help Ease Pain For Arthritis Patients Safely

A widely used supplement combination may offer real relief for people suffering from joint pain, according to new research. The findings suggest that glucosamine and chondroitin, two natural compounds found in healthy cartilage, could significantly ease symptoms of osteoarthritis and improve mobility without the side effects associated with prescription drugs.

Arthritis and other joint-related conditions affect around 10 million people in the UK and the USA. These issues often cause pain, stiffness, swelling, and limited movement. While there is currently no cure for arthritis, many treatments can help manage the symptoms. Alongside prescribed medication, lifestyle changes such as exercise and a balanced diet are recommended. Some patients also turn to supplements in hopes of reducing inflammation and discomfort.

Glucosamine and chondroitin are among the most popular of these supplements. Both are key components of cartilage, the tissue that cushions joints and allows for smooth movement. They are often taken together in capsule or powder form, commonly by those living with osteoarthritis—the most prevalent type of arthritis in the UK and the USA.

Osteoarthritis occurs when cartilage breaks down over time, leading to joint pain, swelling, and stiffness. The Arthritis Foundation explains how these supplements might help: “Glucosamine and chondroitin are natural compounds found in healthy cartilage – the connective tissue that cushions joints.

Supplements are manufactured from the cartilage of animals such as cows, pigs, or shellfish, or are made in a lab. In osteoarthritis, the gradual degeneration of cartilage leads to pain, swelling, and other symptoms. Glucosamine and chondroitin have anti-inflammatory properties. Glucosamine and chondroitin protect cells called chondrocytes, which help maintain cartilage structure.

In theory, these supplements have the potential to slow cartilage deterioration in the joints, and to reduce pain in the process.” A 2008 study published in the Journal of Pain and Palliative Care Pharmacotherapy found that glucosamine and chondroitin significantly reduced discomfort among arthritis patients. About 79 percent of participants with moderate to severe pain reported a “greater reduction” in discomfort—around a 20 percent decrease—compared to 54 percent in the placebo group.

Further research published in the Annals of Rheumatic Diseases in 2016 showed that this supplement combination was as effective at easing knee osteoarthritis pain as celecoxib, a common prescription medication, but without the typical side effects.

According to the NHS, arthritis symptoms can include joint pain, inflammation, restricted movement, and muscle weakness. Anyone experiencing these symptoms—or considering supplements—should consult their doctor before beginning treatment.
