Melania Trump Praised For Role In Ukrainian Peace Talks Despite Absence

Melania Trump has taken on an unexpected role in her husband’s diplomatic push for peace in Ukraine, making her presence felt even without being in the room.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky personally thanked the First Lady in a post on X Monday night, after she was referenced several times during President Trump’s meetings with Zelensky and European leaders.

Her involvement began over the weekend, when she wrote a letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, hand-delivered by Trump on Saturday. The note focused on children affected by the war.

“Some children are forced to carry a quiet laughter, untouched by the darkness around them—a silent defiance against the forces that can potentially claim their future,” the letter read. It urged Putin to “restore their melodic laughter.”

On Monday, Zelensky handed Trump another letter, this one written by his wife, Olena Zelenska, addressed to Melania Trump. “Many thanks to your wife, the first lady of the United States,” Zelensky told Trump. “She signed a letter to Putin about our children.” He added with a smile, “It’s not to you, it’s to your wife, a sensitive topic.” Trump replied, “Oh, I want it.”

The White House has recently highlighted the abduction of 20,000 Ukrainian children by Russian forces, calling it a concern for President Trump ahead of his upcoming summit with Putin. Zelensky later thanked Melania directly for her “attention to one of the most painful and difficult issues of this war,” emphasizing the suffering of children and families torn apart.

“Her voice matters, and her care gives strength to this cause,” he said. Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha also praised her efforts, calling them “a true act of humanism.” President Trump, posting on Truth Social, said he discussed “the massive worldwide problem of missing children” with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, noting it was “a big subject with my wife, Melania.”

Von der Leyen echoed the concern on X, writing, “The human cost of this war must end. And that means every single Ukrainian child abducted by Russia must be returned.” Trump told reporters earlier Monday that Melania’s love for their son Barron inspired her to get involved, even from a distance.

“She’s got a great love of children, she has a wonderful son that she loves probably more than anybody, including me—I hate to say it,” Trump said. “But she loves her son, she loves children, and she hates to see something like this happening.” Helping children has long been one of Melania Trump’s signature causes, through initiatives like Be Best and her recent push for online safety laws.
