Duchess Sophie to Lead Royal VJ Day Anniversary Events Honoring War Veterans, Kate and William Absent

Duchess Sophie is set to take on a prominent royal role next week as the Royal Family begins commemorations for the 80th anniversary of VJ Day, Buckingham Palace has confirmed.

According to GB News, the Duchess will visit Sarum Manor Care Home in Salisbury, where she will meet 105-year-old Royal Marines veteran James “Jim” Wren.

As Patron of The Java Far East Prisoner of War Club 1942, Sophie will listen to Wren’s extraordinary account of survival. His story dates back to the 1941 sinking of HMS Repulse during World War II and his subsequent capture in Singapore. Wren endured more than three years as a prisoner of war under harsh and inhumane conditions.

In addition to hearing his testimony, the Duchess will join other residents of the care home for a seated exercise class, reflecting her ongoing dedication to supporting both veterans and the elderly.

VJ Day — Victory over Japan Day — marks Japan’s surrender in August 1945, which effectively ended World War II. This year’s official commemorations will take place on August 15, with events scheduled across the United Kingdom to honor those who served in the Far East and those who never returned home.

Buckingham Palace confirmed that King Charles III will deliver a recorded message for the occasion, recognizing the sacrifices of service members and their families. The King and Queen Camilla are also expected to attend a Service of Remembrance in Staffordshire as part of the national program.

Notably, Prince William and Princess Kate are not slated to appear at any VJ Day-related engagements. Their absence comes during a period of transition for the monarchy, prompting speculation about their evolving public roles and how responsibilities are being redistributed among senior royals.

The Duchess of Edinburgh’s involvement in such a significant anniversary underscores her growing profile within the Royal Family. Sophie has long been praised for her hands-on approach to public engagements, often engaging directly with communities and charitable organizations. Her patronage of The Java Far East Prisoner of War Club 1942 is one of several veteran-focused roles she has embraced in recent years.

The meeting with Jim Wren will serve as both a symbolic and deeply personal moment within the commemorations. For many, VJ Day is not just a historical milestone but a living memory — and Sophie’s visit aims to bridge the gap between past and present, ensuring the stories of those who served are preserved for future generations.
