Newly released court documents have unveiled horrifying details surrounding the death of 8-year-old Genesis Ariah Mata, whose body was discovered in a hotel bathtub in Bakersfield, California, over the weekend.
Genesis was found deceased Saturday evening inside a room at the La Quinta Inn on Riverside Drive and Buck Owens Boulevard. Authorities say the child was the victim of prolonged and extreme abuse that ultimately led to her death.
Two suspects, Ray Mata Jr., 31, of Bakersfield, and Graciela Bustamonte, 27, of Delano, have been arrested and charged with first-degree murder, torture, and willful cruelty to a child. Both have pleaded not guilty, told Bakersfield’s dual NBC/CW affiliate KGET.
According to the probable cause affidavit, the abuse spanned two days, during which Mata and Bustamonte allegedly worked “in tandem” to inflict severe injuries on the child. The documents state that they poured scalding hot water on Genesis, resulting in “ripping of the skin” from her body.
Further disturbing allegations include crushing the girl’s hand so severely that her fingernails were torn from the nail bed. Under police interrogation and after being read his Miranda rights, Mata reportedly confessed to punching Genesis in the abdomen, a blow that caused her to lose consciousness and ultimately led to her death.
Bustamonte, according to the court filing, admitted to participating in the violent acts that caused Genesis’s fatal injuries. Both defendants are being held without bail and are scheduled to return to court later this month as the investigation continues.
