Rep. Lauren Boebert is speaking out after her son, Tyler Boebert, was hit with a misdemeanor child abuse citation involving her infant grandson, calling the incident a result of a “miscommunication.”
Tyler, 20, was cited by Windsor, Colorado, police on July 11 for criminal negligence that didn’t involve any injury or death, according to a police summons first reported by local outlet Westword. Specific details about what exactly happened haven’t been publicly released.

The Colorado congresswoman stated over the weekend, trying to clear the air. Speaking to People, she said the incident arose from confusion over who was watching her grandson at the time.
“Tyler has been doing a great job getting his life on track as a father and citizen over the past year,” Boebert said. “Unfortunately, this event stems from a miscommunication on monitoring my young grandson, which recently led to him getting out of our house.”
She added that they had dealt with the issue privately. “I am confident this is a one-time incident that we have addressed as a family,” she told the New York Post.
Tyler became a father in 2023 when he and his girlfriend welcomed Boebert’s first grandchild. While the congresswoman has publicly embraced her new role as a grandmother, Tyler’s path into fatherhood hasn’t come without turbulence.
He’s had several run-ins with the law in recent years. Back in October 2024, he pleaded guilty to attempted identity theft after being accused of breaking into cars and using stolen credit cards. He avoided jail time in that case.
Before that, in 2022, Tyler was involved in a car accident where he flipped his father’s SUV. A passenger was injured in the crash. He was initially cited for careless driving, but the charge was later reduced to a minor vehicle defect over headlights as part of a plea deal, according to the New York Post.

Despite these brushes with the law, Boebert insists her son has been working to turn things around. She has often portrayed herself as a tough, values-first conservative and vocal supporter of law enforcement, which has made her family’s legal troubles a regular topic among critics.
Now, with a child abuse citation involving her grandson — and no full explanation yet on what exactly happened — Boebert is once again under the spotlight, this time not for her fiery political soundbites, but for her own family’s struggles behind the scenes.
