13-Month-Old Drowns in Bathtub While Mom Was Cooking Breakfast in the Kitchen

A Milwaukee woman has been formally charged with child neglect resulting in death after her 13-month-old son tragically drowned in a bathtub earlier this month. According to a criminal complaint filed on May 19, prosecutors allege that Selena Renee Doxzon left both of her young sons unattended while she prepared breakfast in another room.

The incident occurred on the morning of May 15. Prosecutors say Doxzon placed her 13-month-old and 3-year-old sons in the bathtub to bathe them. After starting their bath, she allegedly went to the kitchen to make pancakes and sausage and began washing dishes, leaving the children alone.

Roughly four minutes later, the criminal complaint states, her 3-year-old son entered the kitchen, soaking wet. Alarmed, Doxzon returned to the bathroom, where she found her 1-year-old son floating face-up in the water. He was unresponsive, with blue lips, told WITI.

Doxzon immediately attempted CPR and called for help. A neighbor assisted until emergency responders arrived on the scene. The child was transported to Children’s Wisconsin, where medical staff attempted to revive him, but he was pronounced dead at 9:45 a.m.

Police later reviewed prior video footage that showed the baby in a bathtub with water 3.5 to 4 inches deep, reaching his lower abdomen. While that level might be manageable for an older child, it posed a significant risk to a toddler with limited mobility and strength.

In interviews with law enforcement, Doxzon reportedly admitted she could not see the bathroom from the kitchen. She also said that she had filled the tub based on her 3-year-old’s size, not accounting for her 1-year-old’s developmental limitations.

According to the complaint, Doxzon acknowledged that she should have used far less water for her younger son’s safety and admitted she typically bathed her children separately. She added that she had only recently stopped bathing the 1-year-old in the kitchen sink.

A preliminary autopsy determined the cause of death as asphyxiation due to drowning. The final autopsy report is still pending, awaiting toxicology and histology results.

Doxzon now faces serious legal consequences as the community grapples with the tragic circumstances of the child’s death. The case serves as a somber reminder of the importance of constant supervision around water, particularly for very young children.
