Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may have built a new life in the United States after stepping back from their royal duties, but one royal expert warns they still face serious challenges ahead — especially when it comes to Prince Harry’s future.
In an interview with The Mirror, royal biographer Tom Bower opened up about the couple’s uncertain path and the unique struggles they may encounter in the years to come. While Bower acknowledges the strength of their relationship, he believes their journey in America is far from smooth.
“If history is to be an indicator of their future together, the royal couple may face more bumps in the road,” Bower said. “But they will do so united, for better or for worse.”
Bower was quick to emphasize his belief that Meghan is committed to her marriage, despite public speculation.
“I’d be hugely surprised if she didn’t stay loyal to Harry – it would be completely contrary to everything we’ve seen of her,” he added.

Still, Bower pointed out that their biggest issue now may not be external pressures but rather Prince Harry’s search for direction and purpose in a post-royal world.
“The real problem for them is what does Harry do?” Bower stated. “He’s 40, hasn’t an official role and he has lots of enemies. Not being close to his family leaves a hole – his focus must be on filling that in California, with Meghan.”
Since relocating to Montecito, California, Meghan and Harry have launched several high-profile projects, including a Netflix docuseries, podcast content, and Harry’s explosive memoir Spare. Yet, Bower suggests that momentum alone is not enough to sustain their long-term relevance or fulfillment.
“It’s impossible to predict exactly what the future holds,” he said. “Other than Harry writing another book or Meghan writing about her experiences, they need to find their purpose.”
For Bower, the key to their next chapter lies in focusing on their family and building a meaningful life outside the shadow of the monarchy.
He noted that Harry should concentrate on spending quality time with Meghan and their two children, Archie and Lilibet, while also carving out a new sense of identity away from his royal roots.
Whether the Duke and Duchess of Sussex can thrive long term in the American spotlight may ultimately depend on Harry’s ability to find that sense of purpose — something Bower argues remains unresolved.
As the couple continues to navigate life on their own terms, royal watchers remain intrigued. Will Harry and Meghan continue to redefine their legacy, or will the absence of royal structure leave a void too great to fill?
Only time will tell, but as Bower put it, their future may hinge on one pivotal question — what does Harry do next?
