A convicted murderer is on the loose after a shocking mistake led to his early release from jail — and now the victim’s family is living in fear, wondering how this could happen.
Kathan Guzman, who was sentenced to life in prison for strangling his 19-year-old girlfriend, Delila Grayson, back in August 2022, was accidentally let out of jail on March 27. The Clayton County Sheriff’s Office admitted the error, saying it came down to staff not paying attention and poor training, reported PEOPLE.

Sheriff Levon Allen told WSB-TV that Guzman’s release was the result of a serious oversight. His staff had looked at a court document that included a “motion to not prosecute,” but that motion only applied to a separate necrophilia charge — not the murder conviction. The paperwork mistake led them to believe he was cleared for release, despite the fact that he had been convicted by a jury of both murder and aggravated assault.
Now, Guzman has been missing for over two weeks, and the Grayson family is desperate for answers — and protection. Christina Grayson, Delila’s mother, is furious and terrified. “They don’t know what’s going on or where he is,” she told WSB-TV. “And this is the problem: I have not seen a ‘Wanted’ nothing. I have not seen an alert or nothing. They have not alerted anyone.”
The situation has left her shaken, especially since she also lost her husband to suicide on the anniversary of her daughter’s death. Christina now lives in Florida, which is where authorities believe Guzman may have fled — and that makes things even more chilling for her.
“Considering seeing what he did to Delilah, I would say that the public is in imminent danger,” she said. “I am petrified for my life. I mean, obviously, a life didn’t mean a thing to him.”

What’s making the situation worse is the sheriff’s department’s silence. The office hasn’t released any information to the public on their social media or through press releases, and that lack of transparency is sparking outrage. Dr. Alieka Anderson-Henry, chair of the Clayton County Commission, called the incident a clear sign of “negligence” and stressed that the public should’ve been warned much sooner.
Now, one of the most dangerous men in the state — someone who has already taken a life — is out there somewhere, and no one seems to know where to find him. Guzman’s release wasn’t just a paperwork error — it’s a catastrophic failure that’s left a grieving family reliving their worst nightmare.
