A man in St Clair County is facing eight criminal charges after a violent series of events that began with the fatal shooting of his brother and ended in a tense hostage situation, according to police. Authorities say the suspect, 39-year-old Jerome Curry, was taken into custody following a multi-agency response Wednesday evening.
Cahokia Heights police stated that officers were dispatched around 7 p.m. to a home on the 4900 block of Piggot Avenue after reports of shots being fired and a person armed with a gun. When officers arrived, they found a woman suffering from multiple gunshot wounds hiding behind a car in the middle of the road. As officers provided medical aid, the woman was able to share details about the shooter and the incident.
Police learned that Curry had entered the home and shot his brother, Terrence Curry, before fleeing the scene in a vehicle. Officers searched the home and found Terrence in the back of the residence with several gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene, KTVI reported.
Roughly 30 minutes later, at around 7:30 p.m., officers with the Shiloh Police Department responded to the 2200 block of Birmingham Drive after receiving reports that a man was holding a family hostage at gunpoint. The descriptions of the suspect and vehicle matched Curry, prompting a coordinated response from Cahokia Heights, Shiloh and O’Fallon police departments.
Negotiators worked to defuse the situation, and after tense moments, Curry released the hostages and surrendered peacefully. No additional injuries were reported during the standoff.
On Friday, the St Clair County State’s Attorney’s Office filed multiple charges against Curry, including murder, attempted murder, aggravated battery, and several weapons-related offenses. Authorities have not released additional details about the motive behind the shooting or the events that led to the hostage situation.
The investigation remains active as police continue gathering evidence from both scenes. Curry is expected to appear in court in the coming days as prosecutors move forward with the case.
