KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A tragic scene unfolded Thursday night in a Northland neighborhood as two young children and a man were found dead in a home, their deaths being investigated as a homicide, according to Kansas City police.
Officers were called around 9:45 p.m. to a home in the 1000 block of NW 91st Terrace for a welfare check. Upon arrival, they noticed smoke and flames coming from inside the house, police said. Initially, officers entered the home but were forced to retreat due to the fire.
The Kansas City Fire Department was called to the scene, quickly extinguishing the blaze to allow further investigation. When officers reentered the home, they discovered a juvenile girl with a gunshot wound. Tragically, she was pronounced dead at the scene. A juvenile boy, also found with a gunshot wound, was transported to a local hospital but later succumbed to his injuries, KSHB reported.
A man was also found inside the home, dead from a gunshot wound. A GoFundMe was established to help their mother, Cecilia, with the funeral costs, as well as other costs related to the tragedy. It’s asking for $40,000, and it had raised just under $29,000 by the early morning of Wednesday, Jan. 8.
A memorial service was scheduled for Jan. 25. Authorities have not released the names of the victims or detailed their relationships, though Kansas City Police Department spokesperson Sgt. Phillip DiMartino confirmed that detectives are not looking for any suspects at this time.
This suggests the incident may have been contained within the home. There was no immediate information about what led to the violence, and the circumstances surrounding the deaths remain unclear. The Kansas City Police Department’s homicide unit is investigating, and officials are urging anyone with additional information to come forward.
