Jay-Z’s Legal Team Pushes to Drop Alleged Abuse Suit Due to Filing Deadline Issues

Jay-Z’s attorney, Alex Spiro, has filed a motion to dismiss a sexual assault lawsuit brought earlier this month, citing expired deadlines, jurisdictional issues, and inconsistencies in the accuser’s claims.

According to the Daily Mail, the plaintiff, identified as Jane Doe, alleges that Jay-Z and Sean “Diddy” Combs sexually assaulted her during an afterparty following the MTV Music Awards in September 2000, when she was 13 years old.

Spiro argued that the legal statute under which the lawsuit was filed did not exist at the time of the alleged incident and could not be applied retroactively. He further questioned the timeline and location provided in the claim, pointing out that travel details presented by the plaintiff contradict the case’s jurisdiction.

Additionally, Spiro highlighted discrepancies in Jane Doe’s account, such as her claim of watching the VMAs on a jumbotron outside the venue—despite evidence showing no such setup was in place at the time.

Tony Buzbee, the attorney representing Jane Doe, dismissed Spiro’s arguments as technicalities and insisted that the law supports the plaintiff.

“The law was designed to protect victims, and it will prevail,” Buzbee stated, according to the outlet. The lawsuit comes amid ongoing legal troubles for Combs, who is facing multiple lawsuits and criminal charges for alleged sexual misconduct and trafficking.

Judge Analisa Torres, overseeing the case, has permitted Jane Doe to proceed anonymously for now. However, the judge also criticized Spiro’s aggressive legal filings as inflammatory and a waste of judicial resources.

Jay-Z has denied the allegations, with Spiro accusing Buzbee of using the lawsuit as a publicity stunt. “These claims are baseless and appear intended to exploit legal loopholes,” Spiro said, as reported by the Daily Mail.

As the case moves forward, it remains to be seen how the court will address the arguments surrounding the statute of limitations and jurisdictional conflicts. The high-profile nature of the lawsuit, involving two of the music industry’s most prominent figures, has drawn significant public attention and intensified the scrutiny surrounding longstanding allegations in the entertainment world.
