Prince William and Kate Middleton are reportedly planning to leave their current residence at Adelaide Cottage in Windsor for the grand Fort Belvedere, despite King Charles’ apparent frustration over what he considers an extravagant and unnecessary move.
The Prince and Princess of Wales, who moved to Adelaide Cottage just three years ago, are said to feel that the property no longer meets their growing family’s needs. According to royal commentator Rob Shuter, the couple has set their sights on Fort Belvedere, an 18th-century Gothic Revival mansion nestled within Windsor Great Park, known for its rich royal history and modern amenities.
“They’ve outgrown Adelaide Cottage,” an insider shared. “Fort Belvedere has it all: history, land, and proximity to Eton.” The mansion is surrounded by expansive grounds, offering the space, privacy, and luxurious features the couple desires for their young family.
Among its many amenities are a private swimming pool, tennis court, rose garden, greenhouse, stables, lakes, paddocks, and several staff cottages. The estate’s layout is particularly ideal for the growing needs of a royal family, and Princess Charlotte is reportedly a fan of the tennis facilities.

The move would also place the family closer to Eton College, where Prince George is expected to enroll in the near future, making the location both convenient and strategic. However, despite the property’s appeal, Fort Belvedere requires extensive renovations, with reports suggesting the costs could run into the millions.
This has reportedly left King Charles “fuming,” with a source saying that the King sees the move as an unnecessary indulgence rather than a practical solution for the family.
The decision to move to Fort Belvedere, with its history, luxury, and proximity to important institutions, appears to be a personal choice for Prince William and Kate, but it has caused tensions within the royal family due to the substantial financial implications and King Charles’ concerns over the perceived extravagance.
