“It Was a $15,000 Weekend That Just Wrecked Me”: Thomas Markle Sr. Turns to Crowdfunding After Life-Saving Surgery

Thomas Markle Sr., the estranged father of Meghan Markle, is facing a medical and financial crisis after undergoing what his family describes as a “life or death” surgery that left him fighting to recover while struggling to pay mounting hospital bills.

The former Hollywood lighting director recently had his left leg amputated during a three-hour operation in the Philippines after a severe blood clot cut off circulation. According to those close to the situation, the limb had turned black, forcing doctors to act quickly to save his life.

With the surgery and follow-up care taking place overseas, Markle Sr. found himself without support from American Medicare or Medicaid, both of which declined to cover treatment outside the United States. As a result, the family launched a GoFundMe campaign in an effort to offset medical expenses and ongoing care costs. So far, the fundraiser has brought in just over $4,500, a figure that barely dents the growing bills.

His son, Thomas Markle Jr., has been vocal about the strain, saying he has already exhausted much of his own savings to keep his father stable. Speaking about the financial toll, he said, “It was a $15,000 weekend that just wrecked me,” referring to emergency payments required simply to stabilise his father before surgery.

Thomas Jr. has also pushed back against online misinformation surrounding the situation. He condemned a fake AI-generated image that circulated on social media, which falsely showed Prince Harry at Markle Sr.’s bedside. He described the image as “disgusting” and “gross,” criticizing what he sees as exploitation of a serious medical emergency.

Despite years of public estrangement, there are signs of quiet outreach behind the scenes. A Palace source confirmed that Meghan sent her father a private handwritten letter following his surgery. Reports also suggest she attempted to locate him by calling hospitals across Cebu, where he is being treated, after confusion over his whereabouts and contact details.

Thomas Markle Sr. has continued to express hope that he might reconcile with his daughter and meet his grandchildren, fearing time may be running out. Meanwhile, critics have seized on the timing of the crisis, accusing Meghan of an “insensitive” public relations approach as the news emerged alongside launches tied to her own projects this month.

As medical bills climb and emotions run high, the situation remains a painful reminder of how unresolved family rifts can resurface during moments of genuine crisis.
