A royal expert has pushed back against Meghan Markle’s explanation for keeping the Sussex name, calling it an act of “desperation” rather than a sentimental choice.
Bronte Coy, royal editor for News.com.au, shared her candid views during an appearance on The Sun’s Royal Exclusive Show with host Matt Wilkinson, questioning Meghan’s reasoning for embracing the Sussex title as a family bond.

The discussion stemmed from the second episode of Meghan’s With Love, Meghan series, in which she told actress Mindy Kaling, “It’s so funny, too, that you keep saying Meghan Markle. You know I’m Sussex now.”
Meghan later elaborated in an interview with People magazine, explaining that the name was something she, Prince Harry, and their children, Archie and Lilibet, all shared. “It means a lot,” she said. “It’s part of our love story.”
However, Coy remained unconvinced by Meghan’s explanation. “Without Sussex, without marrying Harry, she’d probably still be in Suits or shows like that,” Coy argued. “She’s elevated to a very famous person now. She married into the royal family as Diana did, as Fergie did.

She’s famous because of that.” Coy went on to question how well-known Meghan would have been without her royal connections. “If she walked around London when she was in Suits, no one would have recognized her,” she said.

Ultimately, Coy acknowledged that Meghan has the right to use the Sussex title, but suggested it would not change public perception. “If she wants to call herself Sussex, that is her married name, call her that—but everyone will know her as Meghan Markle.”
Meghan’s name choice has reignited discussions about her identity and the role she plays in the royal narrative. While she continues to shape her public persona post-royal life, experts like Coy argue that her fame remains deeply tied to her marriage to Prince Harry.
