Meghan Markle, the wife of Prince Harry, has recently been distancing herself from issues associated with her husband, particularly amid his ongoing public row with the AIDS and HIV charity Sentebale, according to former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond.
Speaking to GB News, Bond explained the reasons behind Meghan’s decision to remain apart from Harry’s charity controversy, asserting that it is a wise and necessary move. The charity, founded by Prince Harry in 2006 with Prince Seeiso of Lesotho, focuses on providing aid to children and young people suffering from HIV/AIDS.
The recent controversy surrounding Sentebale began after Dr. Sophie Chandauka, the chairwoman of the charity, accused the organization of misogyny and mismanagement. These accusations led to Prince Harry and some other trustees stepping down from their roles. The allegations were subsequently dismissed by the Charity Commission.
Bond pointed out the complexity and sensitivity of the issue. “This is a very sensitive issue all around. Sentebale was Harry’s charity from the start, along with his co-founder, Prince Seeiso,” Bond said. “The allegations of misogyny and misogynoir—both discounted by the charity commission—make this an even more sensitive issue for Meghan to become involved with.”
Given the gravity of the situation, Bond believes Meghan made the right choice by staying out of the public conflict. “I think she has wisely taken a back seat on this and left it to [Meghan’s] husband,” Bond added, further emphasizing the importance of Meghan keeping her distance during such a tumultuous time for Harry and his charity.
Meghan and Harry have both faced significant media scrutiny in recent years, with their decision to step back from royal duties and move to the United States. Their personal and professional lives have continued to generate public interest, but the couple has generally maintained a low profile when it comes to certain controversies.
