“The law must take its course”: King Charles keeps distance from Andrew after arrest, experts say

King Charles is reportedly keeping a careful distance from his brother Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor following his recent arrest, as palace aides worry that any public interaction could spark renewed controversy for the royal family.

The British monarchy has already been under intense scrutiny in recent weeks, even after Charles made the major decision to strip Andrew of all titles and honours. The king also publicly stated his support for the police investigation, emphasising that the legal process must proceed without interference.

According to reports, Charles recently stayed at Sandringham while Andrew was residing at a temporary home only about two miles away. Despite the short distance between them, no meeting between the brothers took place during the visit.

Royal watchers believe that decision was deliberate. Experts say the king is trying to prevent further damage to the monarchy’s reputation at a time when the institution is already facing heightened public attention. While private communication may be taking place, any public meeting could quickly become a major media event.

Royal biographer Phil Dampier suggested that Charles may still feel sympathy for his brother but understands the importance of protecting the monarchy’s image. “At the end of the day he is his brother, and I’m sure he feels for him to some extent,” Phil claimed.

Despite the lack of a public meeting, commentators believe the brothers are still communicating privately. However, any contact is expected to remain strictly out of public view to avoid attracting media attention.

Former Press Secretary to Queen Elizabeth II, Ailsa Anderson, also weighed in on the situation, explaining that the royal family’s physical distance from Andrew may have helped prevent the story from escalating further in recent weeks.

According to Anderson, even a brief visit from the king could immediately reignite the controversy surrounding Andrew. She pointed out that if Charles were seen visiting his brother, photographers would likely capture the moment instantly because the media is closely monitoring the situation.

Such images, she warned, could quickly reignite public debate and dominate headlines again. Anderson explained that this type of attention could “escalate the story and it would bring it back to the surface again.”

Because of that risk, the palace appears to be prioritising quiet, private communication instead of public gestures that might draw renewed scrutiny.

The strategy reflects the royal family’s broader effort to distance the monarchy from the scandal while still acknowledging the personal family relationship between the brothers.

For Charles, balancing those two realities has become a delicate task. As monarch, he must demonstrate that the royal family respects the legal process and maintains accountability. At the same time, Andrew remains his brother, creating a difficult personal situation behind palace doors.

With the investigation ongoing, royal aides appear determined to avoid any actions that could trigger another wave of headlines or public criticism. For now, keeping interactions private seems to be the approach the palace believes will prevent the situation from escalating further.
