Kate Middleton, Princess of Wales, took on a central role as the royal family welcomed President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump to the United Kingdom for their state visit.
Ahead of the trip, the Trumps had expressed their enthusiasm about the Princess’s participation. They were “thrilled” that she would play a “prominent role” throughout the visit, with royal sources saying her involvement was a carefully considered decision.
However, the welcome ceremony sparked some chatter when observers noted that Melania Trump did not curtsey to members of the royal family. Royal historian Marlene Koenig quickly dismissed any suggestion of a slight, explaining that such gestures are not required.
“It’s not customary for Americans or indeed people from countries where King Charles is not the sovereign to curtsey or bow,” Koenig said. Seeking to underscore her admiration for Kate, Melania shared her excitement about joining the Princess for part of the visit.

The First Lady said she was “absolutely” thrilled to participate in their joint engagement planned for the second day. On Thursday morning, Kate and Melania are scheduled to meet at Frogmore Gardens on the grounds of Windsor Castle.
There, the First Lady will be introduced to the Scouts’ Squirrels programme, which helps children explore the natural world as they work toward earning their “Go Wild” badge. The programme mirrors some of Melania Trump’s long-standing interests.
During her husband’s first term as president, she launched the Be Best initiative, which emphasized children’s well-being, online safety, and healthy living. “The First Lady cares about the wellness and well-being of children worldwide,” her office told Hello! magazine, referring to her Be Best campaign.
“[It’s] something that Mrs Trump demonstrated in the first term and wants to continue to enhance in the second term.” Kate Middleton’s involvement in the visit underscores her growing role within the royal family. Often described as a unifying presence, the Princess of Wales has been increasingly visible at high-profile state functions.
Her collaboration with Melania Trump during the engagement is seen as a way of bridging traditions of the monarchy with international outreach. Despite the brief stir over protocol, the visit is being framed as a moment of shared focus on children and their development.
