Trump Gives Vance Expanded Role in Russia Ukraine Peace Talks Effort

Donald Trump has tasked Vice President J.D. Vance with an expanded role in coordinating a potential peace deal between Russia and Ukraine, a responsibility that could prove pivotal ahead of the 2028 election.

The announcement came after historic summits in Alaska and Washington. Trump said Vance would join Secretary of State Marco Rubio and special envoy Steve Witkoff in working to end the war in Europe. This marks the first time Vance and Rubio, both viewed as future Republican presidential contenders, have been brought into the same high-profile foreign policy challenge.

The assignment carries risks. Observers note it could be a poisoned chalice, given continued doubts about Russian President Vladimir Putin’s willingness to stop the conflict. “At least it’s a better assignment than Biden gave Kamala Harris with immigration,” said veteran political analyst Larry Sabato, reports The Daily Beast.

Vance has built a reputation as a frequent traveler, often mixing official visits with family vacations. He and Second Lady Usha Vance recently visited the United Kingdom, where they met with the foreign secretary before heading to the Cotswolds and later Scotland, where he played golf at Trump’s Turnberry course.

Past trips have taken him to Italy, the Vatican—where he was the last to meet the late Pope Francis—and India, where his family posed in traditional clothing at the Taj Mahal. Trump confirmed Vance’s new role in a Truth Social post Monday night after meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky alongside European leaders and NATO officials.

The Washington summit represented a major breakthrough in a war that has raged since February 2022, offering the first real signs of possible progress. For Zelensky, the gathering was a boost. He faced a far warmer reception compared with his last Oval Office visit in February, when Vance sharply criticized him for not showing enough gratitude for U.S. aid.

This time, the vice president remained silent, to the relief of Zelensky’s supporters. “What a difference it makes when Trump is hemmed in by the adults in the room and J.D. Vance is sitting at the kids’ table,” Democratic influencer Majid Padellan wrote on X.

Following the summit, Trump called Putin and began arranging a direct meeting. “After that meeting takes place, we will have a Trilat, which would be the two Presidents, plus myself,” he posted. Still, doubts linger over Russia’s commitment. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov downplayed the chances of talks moving forward on Tuesday.

Trump ruled out sending U.S. troops to Ukraine but left open the option of air support. That creates a delicate balancing act for Vance, who has previously opposed additional American military aid. His office declined comment on his coordination plans, though he retweeted Trump’s post and praised White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt for her defense of the administration’s handling of the talks.
