The feud between Donald Trump and Andrew Cuomo just got a fresh twist. According to The New York Times, Trump’s Justice Department has launched a new criminal investigation into the former New York governor, raising many eyebrows. Cuomo, a longtime Trump critic, is reportedly preparing to jump into the New York City mayoral race, and now he’s suddenly back under the DOJ microscope. The timing? Kind of hard to ignore.
The investigation began about a month ago and centers on Cuomo’s handling of nursing homes during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. You might remember that controversial order back in 2020 when his administration required nursing homes to admit patients who had tested positive for COVID-19. At the time, Cuomo’s team said they were following federal guidelines, but the decision has since been criticized for endangering vulnerable elderly residents.

Now, Trump’s DOJ is digging into whether Cuomo misled Congress about those decisions. Two people familiar with the matter told The Times that Republicans are accusing him of lying during his testimony on the topic.

To make things even more politically tangled, the investigation into Cuomo comes shortly after senior Justice Department officials pushed prosecutors to drop an unrelated corruption case against New York City’s current mayor, Eric Adams. Adams is running for re-election as an independent and is expected to face Cuomo in the race. So yeah, that’s where the timing gets a little fishy.
Unsurprisingly, the whole thing is setting off alarms about whether Trump is using the Justice Department to go after political enemies. The Times reported that these overlapping legal cases are only going to ramp up accusations that the DOJ is being used as a weapon under Trump’s leadership.

Cuomo’s camp is calling a foul. His spokesman, Rich Azzopardi, didn’t hold back when asked about the probe. “We have never been informed of any such matter, so why would someone leak it now?” he said. “The answer is obvious: This is lawfare and election interference plain and simple — something President Trump and his top Department of Justice officials say they are against.”
Azzopardi also defended Cuomo’s previous testimony about the nursing home policy, saying he “testified truthfully to the best of his recollection about events from four years earlier” and had even offered to answer any additional questions from Congress. “But from the beginning this was all transparently political,” he added.
