Starting Monday, Donald Trump is set to make history as the first former president of the United States to stand trial on criminal charges. The gravity of the situation seems to have sparked a flurry of social media activity from Trump, who began the day with a series of anxious posts regarding his impending legal challenges.

In his social media outburst, Trump pointed fingers at President Joe Biden, attributing his legal troubles to the current administration. He vehemently argued that his indictment in the Manhattan criminal trial, which centers around his hush money payment to porn actress Stormy Daniels prior to the 2016 presidential election, should be dismissed. Trump’s primary argument for dismissal hinges on claims that the statute of limitations has expired.

He also raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest involving Judge Juan Merchan, who is presiding over the case. Trump faces a total of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. These charges relate to his efforts to conceal the reimbursements he made to his then-attorney, Michael Cohen, for payments Cohen made to Daniels. These payments were allegedly made to prevent Daniels from disclosing an extramarital affair with Trump.

While the statute of limitations for such a crime typically stands at five years, there is an exception in New York law that pauses this limitation if the defendant is residing out of state. Trump’s four-year tenure in the White House, during which he lived outside of New York, activates this exception.

The case is spearheaded by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, who asserts that Trump, alongside Cohen and National Enquirer publisher David Pecker, orchestrated a plan to silence Daniels and former Playboy model Karen McDougal. Their silence was deemed crucial, especially in the wake of the “Access Hollywood” tape, which had severely threatened Trump’s presidential campaign just weeks before the election.

This trial not only marks a significant moment in U.S. history but also highlights the intricate legal challenges Trump faces. As he confronts these accusations, the public and legal community alike are keenly observing how these proceedings will unfold, bearing in mind the substantial implications they hold for Trump’s legacy and the broader political landscape. As the trial progresses, it will delve deeper into the details of these alleged clandestine operations and the legal arguments both for and against the applicability of the statute of limitations in this high-profile case.
