EU Fast-Tracks Plans for Peace Without US Support Amid Trump Administration’s Shifting Strategy

The European Union is accelerating efforts to maintain peace independently of the United States, following recent comments from the Trump administration. A defense official from a European country spoke to Politico, revealing that “awkward” conversations regarding America’s role in European security are now at the forefront of discussions.

The official explained that the “uncertainty” surrounding how the US would respond to global conflicts had become “just too high,” prompting Europe to take matters into its own hands. This shift follows the release of the Trump administration’s National Security Strategy, which has raised concerns in European nations about America’s commitment to global peacekeeping.

While the US has played a role in facilitating peace talks, particularly in the ongoing Ukraine-Russia conflict, the National Security Strategy made it clear that the US will no longer support “the entire world order.” The strategy’s statement reads, “The days of the United States propping up the entire world order like Atlas are over. Wealthy, sophisticated nations … must assume primary responsibility for their regions.”

These remarks have led to increased anxiety in Europe. In an interview earlier this week, Trump further expressed dissatisfaction with European leadership, claiming that world leaders in Europe “don’t know what to do” and describing the continent as “decaying.”

Experts have cautioned that this shift in US policy could have dire consequences. Georg Riekeles and Varg Folkman warned that a deprioritization of European stability would be a “brutal lose-lose” for all parties involved. In their analysis, they noted that US officials have indicated for over a decade that China, not Europe, should be the primary focus. However, European governments have found the idea of the US stepping back from the continent’s security to be “remarkably abstruse.”

Riekeles and Folkman added, “The war in Ukraine has intensified this tension: Europe’s thinking is that a US withdrawal or an imposed, unequal peace would produce chaos in Ukraine and instability across Europe.” They believe the Trump administration’s approach may be part of a larger strategy to reshape European politics in a manner that aligns with US interests.

“The shift is clear: as Washington pulls back militarily, it will increase its influence through other means, such as financial power, diplomatic pressure, export controls, trade measures, and secondary sanctions,” they concluded. “These tools will be used to steer Europe in the political direction the US wants.”

In response, European nations are now fast-tracking plans to secure their interests, realizing they may no longer be able to rely on the United States as they once did.
