Fox News anchor Sean Hannity didn’t hold back his criticism after reports emerged that Republicans are considering raising taxes on wealthy Americans. According to Bloomberg, a new tax proposal being discussed by GOP leaders in the White House, Senate, and House would create a new 40% tax bracket for individuals earning $1 million or more annually, up from the current 37% for those earning above $626,350.
The report states that the idea “signals the GOP under President Donald Trump is seriously considering ideas to raise taxes on the rich.” That’s a move Hannity, who reportedly earns around $45 million a year, slammed during a recent episode of his radio show.

“I just think it is bad for the economy. It seems to go against everything Donald Trump has ever believed in,” Hannity said, according to a transcript flagged by Americans for Tax Reform. “I’ve been reading the same things you’ve been reading, and frankly, I just haven’t been believing it,” he added. “Pretty unbelievable to be honest.”
Hannity argued that instead of considering tax hikes, Republicans should be pushing for the opposite. “What Republicans would go forward with a tax increase when they should be making the Trump tax cuts permanent, eliminating tax on tips, social security, and overtime. Because that’s what the President promised. Why would they go in any other direction?”

The backlash wasn’t limited to Hannity. Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform and a prominent anti-tax advocate, also weighed in on Tuesday, dismissing the proposal entirely. “It’s not going to happen,” Norquist said.
As pressure mounted, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) was asked about the proposal but didn’t offer a clear answer. “We’ll have to see,” he told reporters.

The idea of raising taxes on high earners appears to have created a surprising stir within Republican ranks, especially given that cutting taxes has long been a cornerstone of the party’s economic agenda. For now, it remains unclear whether the plan will move forward or if it will fizzle out under internal opposition from key conservative voices.
