Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) is facing renewed attacks from right-wing activist Laura Loomer after appearing on a podcast where she condemned the killing of a conservative organizer. Loomer, a self-described MAGA influencer, escalated the feud with inflammatory posts that targeted both Omar and Muslims more broadly.
On Thursday, journalist Mehdi Hasan interviewed Omar on Zeteo News. The conversation included a discussion of the recent murder of conservative activist Kirk. Both Hasan and Omar condemned the crime and expressed sympathy for Kirk’s grieving family. Soon after the interview, clips began circulating online that suggested Omar was indifferent or pleased about the killing.
Omar quickly pushed back against the claims. “Right-wing accounts trying to spin a false story when I condemned his murder multiple times is fitting for their agenda to villainize the left to hide from the fact that Donald Trump gins up hate on a daily basis,” she wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Loomer seized on Omar’s response, posting on X that the Minnesota congresswoman is a “terrorist sympathizer” and “the enemy from within.” She went further in a separate post, writing, “Ilhan Omar needs to be removed from Congress. How much more damage are we going to allow Muslims to cause our country before we say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH with these invaders coming into our country and terrorizing Americans with their caveman ideology?”
Loomer, who has previously been banned from major platforms before returning through X’s looser moderation rules, has built her brand on incendiary attacks against Democrats and Muslims. Omar, who has long been a target of right-wing disinformation campaigns, has frequently defended herself against claims that misrepresent her views or comments.
The controversy underscores how social media continues to amplify political disputes. Omar’s original interview expressed sympathy for a family who lost a loved one to violence. But edited clips stripped of context quickly went viral in conservative spaces, sparking outrage and fueling Loomer’s attacks.
Supporters of Omar argue the backlash is another example of coordinated efforts to smear Muslim lawmakers and stoke anti-immigrant sentiment. Critics, however, claim that Omar invites controversy through her outspoken positions on U.S. foreign policy and domestic politics.
As the 2024 election season accelerates, figures like Loomer are likely to continue using confrontations with high-profile Democrats such as Omar to galvanize their base. For Omar, the latest dispute adds to the challenges of navigating a political landscape where every statement can be weaponized.
