In a surprising shake-up at one of the country’s most powerful prosecutors’ offices, Maurene Comey, daughter of former FBI director James Comey, has been fired from her role as senior trial counsel in Manhattan’s U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Comey, who’s had a hand in some of the most high-profile criminal cases of the last few years, including the recent investigation into Sean “Diddy” Combs and past prosecutions of Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, was reportedly let go on Wednesday. A Justice Department official confirmed the dismissal to Fox News, saying the decision came from the Executive Office for U.S. Attorneys.
What’s raising eyebrows is that no one’s saying exactly why she was fired — and the U.S. Attorney’s Office isn’t returning calls for comment. That silence, combined with Comey’s résumé, is only fueling speculation.
It’s worth noting that Comey comes from a family familiar with political firestorms. Her father, James Comey, was famously fired by President Donald Trump back in 2017 after he launched the Russia investigation into Trump’s 2016 campaign. Recently, the DOJ quietly acknowledged there’s some sort of probe involving the elder Comey, though what it’s about is still under wraps.

So naturally, people are wondering if Maurene’s dismissal might be more political than procedural. During Trump’s presidency, there were reports of the administration targeting Justice Department lawyers involved in cases that irked the president. Given her father’s history with Trump, some are asking: Was Maurene Comey always on borrowed time?
Her sudden departure also marks the latest turn in what’s been a rollercoaster year for the Manhattan U.S. Attorney’s Office. Danielle Sassoon, a respected prosecutor, stepped down in February — reportedly in protest over the DOJ dropping corruption charges against New York City Mayor Eric Adams. Sassoon herself had replaced Edward Kim, who was dismissed by Trump’s team during the presidential transition. Sassoon’s temporary replacement, Podolsky, was recently promoted following her resignation.
The office has become something of a revolving door, and Comey’s firing just adds more intrigue to the already turbulent climate.
No one’s saying yet whether her work on the Diddy case had anything to do with her termination. Combs has been facing serious scrutiny from federal investigators in recent months, and Comey’s involvement placed her back in the headlines. Before that, she was part of the prosecution team that helped bring Ghislaine Maxwell to justice and had previously worked on matters connected to the late Jeffrey Epstein.

Whatever the reason, it’s rare for a high-profile federal prosecutor to be fired so abruptly, and even rarer for no explanation to be given. With all the questions still hanging in the air, don’t be surprised if this story heats up again in the coming weeks.
For now, one thing’s clear: When you come from a politically charged background, even a stellar record might not be enough to shield you from fallout.
