Kansas Woman on Probation for DUI Allegedly Causes Deadly Head-On Crash After Drinking at Bar

A Kansas woman with a history of drunk driving has been charged with multiple felonies in connection with a deadly head-on collision in Saline County that killed 55-year-old Deanna “June” Sommerfeld and seriously injured her husband.

On Tuesday, authorities arrested 32-year-old Kayla Errebo, charging her with second-degree murder, aggravated battery, violation of duty as a driver, reckless driving, circumvention of an ignition interlock device, and improper lane usage. The charges stem from an August 8 crash on K-140, where prosecutors allege Errebo, suspected of driving under the influence, veered into oncoming traffic and struck the Sommerfelds’ vehicle.

Friends of the victim say the tragedy is even more painful knowing Errebo’s long record of DUI-related offenses. “Never get behind the wheel while you’re drinking,” one friend told 12 News. “Unfortunately, this person hasn’t learned that lesson, and it cost the life of our good friend.”

Court records show Errebo was arrested in January 2024 for DUI and tampering with an ignition interlock device. She was arrested again on June 27, 2024, for DUI, fleeing from an officer, driving without a valid license, and operating a vehicle without the required ignition interlock.

She pleaded guilty in October 2024 and was sentenced to one year of probation, set to end in November 2025. That probation was revoked following her latest arrest.

During Tuesday’s court appearance, prosecutors requested that bond be set at $1.5 million to $2 million, but the judge set it at $1 million. If released, Errebo will be required to wear both a GPS monitoring device and an alcohol detection device. She is also prohibited from driving and from contacting victims or witnesses in the case.

Investigators say Errebo fled the crash scene, but evidence linked her to the vehicle involved. The fatal collision left Mark Sommerfeld hospitalized with serious injuries. A GoFundMe has been launched to help cover funeral costs for Deanna and medical expenses for her husband.

Errebo is scheduled to return to court for a preliminary hearing on August 22. Meanwhile, Sommerfeld’s loved ones are calling for justice, saying her death was entirely preventable.
