A Raleigh man has been charged with assault after allegedly spraying blood into the eyes of two health care workers, exposing them to HIV. According to police, 25-year-old Kameron Gilchrist faces two counts of assault on emergency personnel following the incident, which took place at UNC Health Rex Hospital on March 21, 2025.
Authorities arrested him nearly six months later, on September 11. The arrest warrant states that Gilchrist was receiving treatment for a diabetic condition when he allegedly sprayed blood into the eyes of two hospital employees. It remains unclear whether the blood came from Gilchrist or another source.
Court documents said the workers sustained physical injuries, including eye irritation and potential exposure to HIV. Officials have not confirmed whether either employee has contracted the virus. UNC Health Rex declined to comment on the specific case but issued a statement addressing the broader issue of workplace safety.
The hospital said violence against medical staff is a growing concern across the health care industry. “Protecting the health and safety of our employees is a top priority,” UNC Health Rex said in a statement to WRAL News. “We work closely with our security teams and law enforcement to ensure safety for everyone and will pursue charges when necessary.”
The hospital did not release details about how the incident unfolded or whether additional staff members were present during the alleged assault. Raleigh police told reporters that Gilchrist was receiving medical and psychiatric treatment following the incident, which prevented his immediate arrest.
Authorities said that once he was cleared, they moved forward with charging him. Gilchrist is currently being held on a $25,000 bond at the Wake County Detention Center. His next court appearance is scheduled for December 8.
The case has drawn renewed attention to the risks faced by health care workers, particularly in emergency and psychiatric settings, where violence has become more frequent. According to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, health care and social service workers experience higher rates of workplace violence than employees in any other profession.
UNC Health Rex emphasized that it continues to review safety protocols and provide support for staff affected by violent incidents. The hospital has not released any updates regarding the medical status of the employees involved. The investigation into the case remains ongoing as law enforcement and hospital officials coordinate on next steps.
