Texas Woman Allegedly Kills Five Below Shopper After Argument Over Not Saying Thank You

A minor disagreement over common courtesy turned deadly Saturday afternoon when a woman was fatally shot outside a shopping center in the Oak Cliff area of Dallas. According to the Dallas Police Department, the shooting occurred around 1 p.m. in the 3500 block of West Wheatland Road.

The victim, identified as 41-year-old Cecilia Simpson, was shot multiple times and rushed to the hospital, where she later died from her injuries. Investigators said the confrontation began when Simpson held the door open for another woman, 22-year-old Keona Zachyua Hampton, at a Five Below store in the same shopping center.

When Hampton failed to thank her, Simpson reportedly became upset, and the two exchanged words. Simpson and her 20-year-old daughter then left the store and drove to a nearby PetSmart, unaware that Hampton had followed them. According to an arrest affidavit, Simpson and her daughter told PetSmart employees they were being followed.

Moments later, Hampton entered the store and began arguing with the daughter before leaving briefly. When she returned, Hampton and Simpson argued again, prompting employees to ask both women to leave. Once outside, the situation escalated further. As Simpson and her daughter got into their car, Hampton allegedly threw a drink bottle at their vehicle. Simpson got out to confront her, and the argument quickly turned physical, according to FOX 4.

Witnesses told police that Simpson struck Hampton several times while yelling at her to back off. Simpson’s daughter said she stepped away from the fight, and that is when Hampton allegedly pulled out a black and silver handgun and fired three shots. Simpson collapsed to the ground as Hampton fled in a black Ford Five Hundred.

Surveillance footage captured the incident, and officers later tracked Hampton to an apartment where she was seen wearing the same clothing from the video. Around 7:45 p.m., police conducted a traffic stop on the black Ford and took Hampton into custody.

During questioning, Hampton admitted to arguing with Simpson and confirmed she shot her, claiming she acted out of fear. “She said she was just trying to get Simpson away from her,” the affidavit stated. Hampton was booked into the Dallas County Jail. Her bond has not yet been set.

A 27-year-old ER nurse who witnessed the altercation said she heard the confrontation moments before the shooting. “The mother and daughter tried to get in the car to de-escalate the situation, but the lady wasn’t having it,” she said. “They started to fight, and that’s when the lady pulled out her gun and shot her.”

The nurse said she performed CPR on Simpson until paramedics arrived. “The daughter was next to the mom the whole time,” she said, recalling the heartbreaking moment. “The screaming of a child for her mother is never easy, and it’s never going to leave my head.”
